There are great advantages to using top 20 names. You don't need to worry about the reception the name will receive -- after all, they represent the most 'liked' names in Britain. Spelling mistakes are less of a problem as well, as many people will know how to spell them automatically.
But sometimes, parents want to avoid the top 20 but still keep that popular edge. Perhaps because they have a large family, and many of the names have already been used, or they know many children under the age of five. They still want their child’s name to be "likeable", just not used so much.
With that in mind I have revamped the lovely names in the top 20 with two alternatives that are similar in sound or feel to the popular favourites. The first are names that are not popular, but not unheard of either – generally lurking around the 500 mark, and fit new up-and-coming trends. The second choices are so cool that they are not. Or to put it another way, names that hit all the right notes but are rare in their usage. These many never be super-popular, but they will definitely be trend-setters.
