Wisteria - Named after Professor Caspar Wistar.
Xanthisma- From the Greek ξάνθος (xanthos) "yellow" and the suffix ισμός (ismos) which denotes an action or state of condition.
Xanthium - Dioscorides' name for the cocklebur which was used to make a yellow hair dye. It derives from the Greek ξάνθος (xanthos) "yellow."
Ximenia - Named after Francisco Ximenez, a Spanish monk who wrote about Mexican plants in 1615.
Xylaria - "Belonging to wood," from the Greek ξύλον (xylon) "wood," as it is usually found growing on wood.
Xylia - Also from ξύλον "wood."
Xyris- Yellow-tipped grass, derived from Greek ξύρον (xyron), "razor", with reference to the double-edged leaves.
Yvesia - A genus of grass, named after botanist Alfred Marie Augustine Saint-Yves, (1855-1933).
Zanonia - Named after botanist Giacoma Zanoni (1615-1682).
Zataria - From za'atar, the Arabic name for Thyme.
Zea - Maize or corn, from the Greek name ζειά (Zeia).
Zebrina - The name alludes to Zebra in the striped nature of the leaves.
Zizania - Wild Rice. Derived from the Greek name (ζιζάνια) for a "tare."
The ancient Greek name, Zenobia, borne by the famous queen of Palmyra, is also a plant genus, as well as Zephyra, the feminine equivalent of Zephyros.
