Over the next 25 days, BBN will have its own advent calendar.
The Christmas we know today is a wonderful mix of ancient traditions from the Roman Saturnalia, the Northern European Yule, and the Celtic winter solstice; incorporated with the Christian celebration of the birth of Christ. Add to that a hefty dose of Victorian manipulation and preening, and we now have a distinctive time of year, observed and celebrated, both religiously and secularly, by many different people in many different ways.
The symbols and pictures that we associate with Christmas have permeated through the centuries, and come from a myriad of different sources. Each day up until Christmas will count down a different Christmas symbol or image, attempting to trace its origins and usage, in order to dig up some conventional and unexpected Christmassy names.
