I have been data-crunching below the Top 100 most popular names of 2011 in England and Wales, to see which names have seen the biggest changes since 2010. There are some surprises — and some we knew were going to happen.
It is difficult to compare numbers with different ranks based solely on the number of ranks gained on lossed. The higher the ranking, the more competitive it gets, and the harder it is to move.
For example, up at #101 Alexis has moved up 21 places and has had an increased birth count from 467 to 575. That's 108 more babies named Alexis in 2010, than 2011. Down at #217, Maggie has managed to double that by jumping up a whopping 59 places. Her birth count, on the other hand, has increased by 52, half that of Alexis.
For this reason, I have split the data into sets of 50 so that each group can be more reasonably compared.
