In the late 19th century, gemstone names became highly fashionable. Ruby, Beryl, Pearl and Jasper took the limelight back then, and when they faded Amber and Jade moved forward.
It's not hard to comprehend why gemstones have seen popular use: they all hold a desirable association with a precious object, used for millenia as symbols of status and importance.
Ruby is now back in favour, and Amber is holding ground; even Jasper is creeping up. Perhaps it is time for other gemstone names to see more usage.
