Let's take a look back at the most popular names in Scotland in the year 1900. If you think this list will be very similar to the Top 100 in England and Wales in 1900, then you'd be wrong. Some of the difference are quite marked, particularly with the popularity of certain names — Hugh at 12 in Scotland, 61 in England and Wales; Jemima at 27 in Scotland, 222 in England and Wales — and the prevalence (quite obviously) of Scottish-origin names.
Another big trend is the -ina feminised names for girls: Christina, Georgina, Williamina, Robina, Wilhelmina, Alexandrina, Davina, Alexina and Thomasina, as well as "Bella" names. For boys, surnames, particularly clan names such as Sinclair, Hamilton and Campbell, are prevalent.
According to the GRO, in 1900 68.4% of all boys, and 58.1% of girls, had a Top 10 name.
