Have you ever walked around Ikea and been more interested in the names than the furniture? Or is that just me? Some seem downright usable -- Jära: a lampshade or Kullen: a chest of draws -- while others are just fun to try and say -- Ödmjuk: a coffee mug and Kvikne: a wardrobe.
There is, in fact, a method to this Swedish gaiety. All Ikea products follow a system, adopted by the company's founder, Ingvar Kamprad, who found that naming products with proper names and words made them easier to identify:
Upholstered furniture, bookshelves, coffee tables, doorknobs, and media storage = Swedish place names
Hall furniture, beds, and wardrobes = Norwegian place names
Dining tables and chairs = Finnish and Swedish place names
Bathroom storage and accessories = Scandinavian rivers, lakes, and bays
Carpets = Danish place names
Bookcases = Occupations
Desks and chairs = Men’s names
Fabrics, materials, and curtains = Women’s names
Curtain accessories = Mathematical and geometrical terms, various adjectives
Bed linen, covers, pillows, and cushions = Plants, flowers, precious stones
Kitchens = Grammatical terms
Children's Items = Animals and adjectives
Lighting = music terms, seasons, months, days, chemistry, measures, weights, boats, nautical terms
