Top 100 Most Popular Names in Scotland 2019

Here are the official figures for the top 100 names in Scotland in 2019. According to the National Records of Scotland, the  #1 names in 2019 were non-mover Jack (#1 since 2008), and Olivia, which has been in the top spot for the fourth year running.

In fact, the top 3 names remained unchanged from 2018 for both boys and girls. There was slightly more movement in the rest of the top 10. On the boys’ side, Charlie and Alfie replaced Logan and Alexander, and for girls, Freya and Charlotte replaced Aria and Jessica.

Compared to the Provisional Top 100 of Scotland 2019, released in December, the rankings are broadly similar. There are a few swaps in position in the top 50, and most of the names between 50-100 — where one or two children can make a difference in ranking — changed position. Ruairidh is now in the top 100, while Frankie and Roman have dropped out. For girls, Hollie rose 7 places in the final rankings once December’s births were added on, showing the effects of seasonal naming. Five extra girl names appear in the final top 100, which is actually a top 106 as there was a seven-way tie for 100th place. These are Clara, Darcy, Penelope, Aila and Lyla.

The new entries or re-entries to the top 100 since 2018 were: Carson, Cody, Ellis, Louie, Ruairidh, Sonny, Theodore, Abbie, Ailsa, Aoife, Elizabeth, Eve, Evelyn, Harley, Lottie, Lucie, Lyla, Mirren, Myla, Nova and Scarlett.

The names that have left the top 100 since 2018 were: Frankie, Jake, Jayden, Josh, Kayden, Lyle, Tyler, Amelie, Kayla, Lena, Nina, Piper, Quinn and Rebecca.

The fastest-rising names in the top 100 were Theodore, Louie, Sonny and Tommy; and Lucie, Mirren and Harley.

The fastest-falling names still in the top 100 were Connor, Aidan, Ben and Callan; and Cara, Lilly and Maria.

I cross-reference older BAs to find the full names of the siblings, however often they are missing (especially the eldest siblings, or for half-siblings) which explains why you will sometimes see something like: George Henry (Lucy, Emma & Jack Arthur). "Lucy" and "Emma" may well have middle names as well; I simply cannot find them online. 

 

Status Update

 

Hello all, 

I haven't been around much recently. Two weeks ago my son made his way into the world via emergency caesarean -- ten weeks before his due date and weighing just over one kilogram. 

To say that it was a shock is an understatement and has involved a prolonged hospital stay for me as well. I am so fortunate to be able to say that, despite his dramatic entrance, little William Brian Kenneth "Will" is doing remarkably well so far in the NICU and making tiny steps of progress every day. 

As you can imagine, my life at the moment has completely turned upside down and I am still trying to navigate parenthood with a premie baby. 

I am certainly not abandoning this blog -- I will do bits that I can when given opportunity -- but it might be several weeks before I am back into a rhythm that can incorporate regular writing. 

As soon as I get a chance, I will fill you in on the story behind his name and how we arrived at a decision.
