The idea for this post is taken from Laura Wattenberg's wonderful posts over at Namerology. Her posts detailed Then, Now and Next names, but as the data for England and Wales is restricted to the top 100 for most of the 20th century, the 'Then' column here would not have been feasible. Instead, I've added a 'Future' column to look at risers lower down in the ranks.
The 'Now' names below are the most popular names in England and Wales for that letter. The 'Next' names are names below them which are rising swiftly behind -- for popular letters these are within the top 50 or top 100. The 'Future' names are names below the top 100 (or often top 400) which are on the rise and indicate the kind of names we will likely see in more of in years to come.
